BB cream is currently one of the hottest and fastest growing makeup trends. You will not browse any makeup department without seeing a BB cream. You may have heard about it and wondered what the hype is about. BB cream, also known as Beauty Balm or Blemish Balm, is intended to be an all-in-one skin care/foundation product. Much like tinted moisturizers, BB creams are lightweight and give you the most natural finish.
When applying makeup, many people use these four products: Moisturizer, primer, concealer, and foundation. The purpose of BB cream is to eliminate some or most these products.
History of BB Cream
BB cream emerged in Germany in the 1960’s. It was developed by dermatologist, Dr. Christine Schramme, who wanted a multi-functional cream to apply to patients after laser treatments. BB cream later became a popular skin care product in Korea, in the 1980’s, and has remained one of the best selling cosmetics in Asia.
BB cream hit the western markets a few years ago and is currently one the biggest makeup trends to date. You will find both low and high end cosmetics companies that offer BB cream.
Choosing a BB Cream
When searching for a BB cream, you must know that not all BB creams are created equal. Some BB creams will act as moisturizer, concealer, sunscreen, and foundation. Others will conceal blemishes, but will not contain SPF. Some BB creams will provide heavy coverage, while others will be more lightweight.
You will need to research and choose the BB cream that best fits your specific skin care needs. One downside to BB cream is that there is not a wide range of color selections. They are usually limited to 3 to 5 shades. Maybelline, CoverGirl, Iman Cosmetics, Bobbi Brown, and Smashbox are some companies that offer BB cream. If you are lucky enough to find a color match, BB cream could be a good alternative to your regular foundation.
